Each year the Mason-Dixon Regiment chooses a monument to honor a particular unit that fought in the battle of Gettysburg. In choosing a monument, research is done on the unit, then the regiment travels to Gettysburg and conducts a ceremony to honor the brave men who fought there. As the history of the chosen unit is read aloud, small flags are placed in the ground to commemorate the heroic deeds of the soldiers. These ceremonies are commmenced on Remembrance Day each year.
2007 found the Mason-Dixon Regiment honoring the 26th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. The band played it's solemn tunes and "Taps" was sounded as a tribute to the fallen.
In 2008 the unit chose the 2nd Connecticut Light Artillery. The Mason-Dixon Regiment began "official" participation in the Gettysburg National Military Park program of "Adopt a Position."
Sargeant Barry Harvey lead the tribute and flags again were placed. "Taps" was sounded by Musician Emma Delisi.
The Mason-Dixon Regiment plans to choose a Confederate Unit of the Civil War to honor in 2009.
The primary purpose of the Adopt-A-Position (AAP) program is to engage volunteers in helping to meet goals established by the Gettysburg National Military Park (GNMP) to maintain the historic setting of the battlefield. The Mason Dixon Regiment helps by performing field maintenance and labor that otherwise would not be completed due to budget and/or staffing restraints. The Mason Dixon Regiment donates time and labor in preserving a battery location-2nd Conn Light Battery. Monuments like any historical feature on the battlefield have additional contributing elements or "assets". The assets include the foundation mounds (an important structural element of most of the regimental monuments) surrounding grounds, adjacent fences or walls, earthworks, any trails or walks to the sites, and may include the pasture in which the monument stands. All of these assets are important to the monument, and/or the positions held by the Union or Confederate troops during the battle Dave Delisi is the Mason Dixon’s representative that’s coordinates this important work with the Gettysburg National Military Park
